I need about 20,000 leagues / of personal space.
Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) · 1870
The front starts the sentence: I need about 20,000 leagues. The back finishes it under a giant squid taking a sailor off the deck, with the distance marked out like an engineer's drawing: of personal space. The artwork is genuinely antique: wood engravings by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou from the first illustrated edition of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Paris, 1870-71), long in the public domain. We restore the scans, build the composition and set the type in-house. Every design in this shop is our own original composition built from authentic vintage artwork. • FRONT: “I need about 20,000 leagues”, with the squid engraving showing through the numerals • BACK: the squid attack, a dimension line marked 20,000 leagues, and “of personal space.” • Printed BOTH sides in chalk-cream ink on the Comfort Colors 1717, a heavyweight garment-dyed 100% ring-spun cotton tee • Colors: Black, Pepper, Graphite, Navy, Sapphire, Blue Jean, Blue Spruce, Moss, Espresso, Chili, Crimson, Berry, Violet, or Red (100% ring-spun cotton, garment-dyed; no heathers) • Unisex sizes S to 2XL, true to size; see the size chart in the photos
